Buffalo Gap School Threat Under Investigation as Augusta County Schools Go Into Secure Status Amid Heavy Police Response
Authorities are actively investigating an anonymous threat directed at Buffalo Gap High School and its staff in Augusta County, Virginia, triggering a rapid security response across the local school system on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a statement from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Buffalo Gap High School and Buffalo Gap Middle School were immediately placed on lockdown after the threat was reported. Law enforcement officers quickly responded to the scene, securing the area and establishing a controlled perimeter around the school complex.
By approximately 1:14 p.m., officials downgraded the situation from a full lockdown to a “secure” status. This shift came after multiple law enforcement units were deployed to the area and no immediate threat or suspicious individuals were located near the school grounds, according to authorities.
As a precaution, all Augusta County Public Schools were also placed under secure status while deputies investigated the credibility of the threat. Officials emphasized that the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” to ensure the safety of students, staff, and faculty across the district.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that all threats toward public schools are treated as credible until proven otherwise. “At this time we have not encountered anyone around the general area of the school. The Sheriff’s Office has established a hard perimeter and is controlling all access points,” the agency stated.
Investigators continue to work to determine the origin of the anonymous threat, while school officials maintain heightened security measures as the situation develops. No injuries or direct incidents have been reported.
The situation remains under active investigation.
