Utah Mother Who Wrote Children’s Grief Book Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Murdering Husband with Fentanyl in Shocking Park City Case

The sentencing of Utah mother Kouri Richins has drawn widespread attention after a judge ordered life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of her husband, Eric Richins, in a case that shocked Park City and captivated national true-crime audiences.

A Utah judge delivered the sentence on Wednesday, describing Richins as “simply too dangerous to ever be free” after a jury convicted her in March of aggravated murder and multiple related felonies. Prosecutors proved that she laced her husband’s cocktail with a lethal dose of fentanyl at their home near Park City in 2022, resulting in his death.

The court also heard evidence that Richins had previously attempted to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day weeks earlier and had taken out multiple life insurance policies without his knowledge. Investigators presented digital evidence, including internet searches and text messages, suggesting financial motive and plans for a new life following his death.

The sentencing hearing was emotional, with family members of the victim urging the court to impose the harshest penalty to protect the couple’s three children. The children, now in the care of relatives, submitted statements expressing fear and trauma tied to their mother’s actions and past behavior.

Richins, who once wrote a children’s book about coping with grief after loss, maintained her innocence in court and said the verdict was “an absolute lie.” Her defense team has confirmed plans to appeal both the conviction and the life sentence.

The case has become one of the most closely followed true-crime trials in Utah in recent years, highlighting themes of financial pressure, family tragedy, and alleged betrayal within a domestic setting.
